Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seed, also known as pepita, is a very commonly available seed that is used throughout most parts of the world. In some countries, such as Mexico, they are even more popular than sunflower seeds.

Although sunflower seeds have traditionally been eaten as a snack, with little regard for their health benefits, recent scientific research has taken a strong interest in sunflowers seeds due to its high levels of L-tryptophan. The scientific community recognizes the following benefits derived from pumpkin seed: reduced levels of and even prevented mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, reduced stored cholesterol levels and a preventative measure of the hardening of the arteries as well as for treating irritable bowel syndrome, however the pumpkin seed's most significant benefit is for reducing an enlarged prostate. These benefits are generally achieved with such a high dose that sunflower seed oil is typically better suited for the task. There are also some unscientific uses of pumpkin seeds to treat certain digestive system problems.

Pumpkin seeds have no known side effects nor any drug interactions although rare cases of those allergic to them do exist.
