The bark of the Yohimbee tree

Yohimbe bark extract, scientifically called Pausinystalia yohimbe, is an herb that comes from an evergreen tree that grows primarily in the Congo and has been used primarily for sexual dysfunction for many years by the natives of the Congo, and the surrounding African countries. It is sold as either a highly concentrated prescription option or as the herb extract in non-prescription doses.

The primary active substance for which yohimbe extract’s benefits are known is an alkaloid called Yohimbine. In controlled studies it has shown to reduce sexual exhaustion and increase ejaculated sperm volume as well as treat orgasmic dysfunction, with the effects lasting for up to five hours after taking the extract. Although Yohimbine has shown potential in other areas, such as Diabetes 2, in certain settings for recall of memory in Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome treatment, fat burning aid, treatment for depression (in usually unsafe doses of Yohimbine) and even some veterinary uses; today it remains mainly used and studied for its male enhancement qualities.

Yohimbe Extract, or specifically Yohimbine, is truly an infamous male enhancement herb due to its quite serious potential side effects. More than even this is the fact the difference between the effective dose and overdose, or side effect causing dose is dangerously close. This is a very good reason to avoid buying Yohimbe Extract, or Yohimbine from any but the most trusted of sources. Several countries, such as Canada, New Zealand, and others, have actually banned Yohimbe Extract in any but prescription form, sold by its government verified facilities. A few countries, like Germany, banned it for any use whatsoever. However due to the mass amount of shipped products and the limitations of these countries’ Customs facilities, these products are usually shipped despite the restrictions because more often than not they still make it to the person ordering it, especially if it is just one ingredient in a multi-ingredient formulation.

These side-effects can include seizures and renal (kidney) failure, fast heart beat, high blood pressure, anxiety attacks, even panic attacks, sleeplessness and hyper-stimulation. Headaches, dizziness, skin flushing, paralysis, and even hallucinations were reported as less typical side effects. A significant overdose will be fatal. There are also diet precautions that must be undertaken in the form of avoidance of certain food such red wine, cheese, and other tyramine based foods. The side effects can be more likely or even more severe, even deadly for anyone who has or had heart, liver or kidney problems. There are cases of a very serious counteraction with modafinil, a narcolepsy medication.
